PDF reference
You are correcting a score against its source — an OMR transcription against the scan it was read from, or your own transcription against an edition. The PDF reference puts the source above every measure in edit view: the scan on top, battuta’s rendering below, so a wrong note, a missing tie or a measure out of place shows at the measure, not three windows away.
Click the 📄 in the header. A panel opens at the bottom.
Loading a PDF
Section titled “Loading a PDF”load a PDF or images… takes the PDF — or its pages as images
(PNG, JPEG, WebP…: one image a page, in the order a _page1, _page2… in
their names gives, else by name) — and its annotation files,
together: select them all at once. The annotation files are what
an OMR pipeline writes beside a PDF: one JSON per page, named
…_page1.json, …_page2.json…, boxing every measure and system on that
page. They are what tells battuta where each measure is. A piece’s
….graph.json is used when no page file is given.
Every page is rendered once, in the editor — nothing is uploaded — and the panel says how many of the score’s measures it placed.
Drawing systems and measures
Section titled “Drawing systems and measures”A PDF without annotation files — a scan, an edition, any PDF — can be placed by hand. Load the PDF alone and choose draw systems and measures: the page opens in the panel, as wide as the window, and three tools mark it.
- ▭ systems — drag a box across a system, from its first clef to its last barline, top staff to bottom. To adjust one, drag any of its four corners (they show while this tool is on); a barline or a split the new box leaves out goes with it.
- | barlines — click in a system where a barline is: the system splits there. Click a barline again to take it away.
- ≡ staves — click in a system between two staves to split it there; the staves are numbered down its left. Click a split again to take it away. With staves, the strip highlights the caret’s staff inside its measure.
− and + zoom the page from a quarter of the panel’s width — most of a page at once, which a wide, short panel needs on a tablet held sideways — up to four times; what was in the middle stays in the middle, and the page scrolls both ways. The × and the corners keep a finger’s size at every zoom. On a tablet or a phone one finger draws and two fingers move the page — a gesture that ever had two fingers draws nothing, so a pan never leaves a box or a barline behind. A mouse wheel or a trackpad scrolls as usual.
Each system’s measures are the stretches between its barlines, numbered as the score’s measures will be matched to them; the × at a system’s corner removes it. ◀ ▶ turn the pages, and the line beside them counts what is drawn against the score’s measures. The scans appear above the tiles as you draw. done returns to the strip.
The drawing is kept for that PDF — load the same file again and it is
back — and it can be saved as annotation files: battuta menu → export
PDF annotations, one …_pageN.json per page, the same format the OMR
files come in.
Above the measures
Section titled “Above the measures”With on the score checked, every measure in edit view carries its scan above it: the measure’s width by the whole system’s height, so every staff is there, fitted to the tile so the barlines stand over each other. A row’s band is as tall as its tallest scan; uncheck the box and the room goes with the scans.
The panel
Section titled “The panel”The strip at the bottom shows the system the caret is in, every
measure outlined and the caret’s highlighted in amber — and, when the
system’s staves are known (drawn, or system-staff boxes in the files),
the caret’s staff in green; move the caret and the strip follows. ◀ and ▶ step through the systems, across pages.
What it does not do yet
Section titled “What it does not do yet”Nothing goes into your MEI: no <facsimile> or <zone> yet, and clicking
a scan does not move the caret. A drawing’s measures are matched in
order — drawn by hand, they carry no ids. It is the first step of the facsimile, and those are the next ones.
On an iPhone or iPad, reading a PDF needs iOS / iPadOS 26.2 or later — the PDF library uses what older systems lack — and the panel says so on an older one. The PDF’s pages as images work everywhere: export them from the PDF, and load them with their annotation files as usual.
Turning it off
Section titled “Turning it off”battuta menu → 🌣 shortcuts → plugins → PDF reference. The 📄, the panel and the scans go together, with the room above the measures. Nothing about your score changes — the plugin only ever reads it.
